Wonderous Words Wednesday

Hello my lovelies!
Happy Wednesday to you!

There’s no WWW Wednesday this week, but I have a different WWW post in its place! I’m still reading Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson but I figured, there’s so many new words (for me) in there that I’d give a new bookish meme a try:

Hosted by the blog BermudaOnion, Wonderous Words Wednesday is a weekly meme where you can share new words that you’ve encountered or spotlight words you love.  Feel free to get creative!”

Eschew

Definition: Deliberately avoid using; abstain from.
Sentence: [Snow Crash] “It’s a short flight, mostly because the military pilot is happy to eschew comfort in favor of speed.”

I found this word while reading Snow Crash and had highlighted the word with a yellow tab. I feel like I’ve come across it here and there, but like many words I don’t know, my brain assumes context based on the sentence around it and then moves on with the story, never stopping to question the definition.

One thing I shy away from is sugar, but to eschew it from my diet (completely) is so hard. I doubt it’s healthy either so I have it in minute amounts. What do you eschew?

  1. What a great idea for a meme. I love the word eschew but can’t imagine ever using it in daily life. It remlnds me of Jane Austen for some reason.
